Story telling is inherent in who we are as Māori and is an integral part of our culture. Centuries of Māori knowledge and history has and always will be passed down through spoken word, thus spoken word poetry in this capacity becomes a new iteration of modern Māori oratory.
Kō is a spoken word poetry visual album about reclaiming identity as a young person in Te Ao Māori. It redefines art and media in a world first spoken word project that showcases indigenous identity through a Māori lens. At its core, Kō is about navigating what it means to be a young Māori person and the art of identity reclamation.
